COURSE DESCRIPTION:  General Biology offers a study of living things.  The program includes various laboratory activities.  Several major themes which will be covered this year include the Scientific Method, Biochemistry, Ecology, Cell Theory, Genetics, Evolution, and Biodiversity.

EXPECTATIONS:

1.      Being prepared for class:  Bring appropriate materials to class everyday.  This includes a 3-ring binder, paper, textbook, assigned homework, labs, and pens and pencils.

2.      Promptness to class:  Come to class on time everyday.  Be seated and quiet when the tardy bell rings.

3.      Attendance:  Your presence is required.  Absences are excused for illness, family emergencies or approved arranged absences.  The student is responsible for making up all missed work.  If you missed class notes it is your responsibility to get them from someone who also has this class.

If an absence is not excused, you will not be allowed to make up work.

A timeline of class activities and assignments will be available online at the beginning of each quarter.  Be sure to check this for any assignments due, especially during an absence.

4.      Care of the classroom:  At the end of the class period, leave your desk and lab table neat and clean, return materials to proper locations, and remain seated until dismissed.  Any vandalism of school property will result in disciplinary action.

5.      Appropriate classroom behavior:  Show respect and common courtesy for all others within the classroom; e.g. raise your hand to be recognized to speak; listen to others; be “contributive, not disruptive”; show proper care of equipment.

         Cell phone policy is OFF and AWAY or it's MINE,

All Students Have The Right To A Positive Learning Environment.

GRADING:  Students are graded on a point/percentage system.  The total composite score will be             made up of homework assignments, quizzes, tests, labs, and projects.  Classroom participation and cooperation will be considered in the evaluation.  Total points possible during the semester are converted to a percentage (and letter grade) according to the following scale:

           A = 90 – 100%
           B = 80 – 89%

           C = 70 – 79%
           D = 60 – 69%

           F = below 60%

LATE WORK:  All assignments are to be handed in on the due date (finished or not).  If you have been  absent, you may have as many days to complete the assignments as you were absent.  If you were only absent on the due date for an assignment, it is due the day you return.  It is the student’s responsibility to schedule the time for making up assignments, tests, and lab work promptly.

EXTRA CREDIT:  Any student may earn up to 5% of the total points each semester.  In order to qualify, however, he/she must have completed all required assignments and not have more than 3 unexcused tardies.  Extra credit work must be turned in at the beginning of the period by Friday of the 8th week of the quarter.  No extra credit will be accepted 4th quarter.

Some ways to earn extra credit are:

1.        1.  Read and summarize biological science articles that appear in the newspaper or science magazines or science journals.

2.        2.  Observe videos on biology topics and turn in a written summary.

3.        3.  Experience the Portland Zoo by spending time learning about animals and exhibits that interest you, and writing a 2 page summary of what you learned about its (their) habitat(s), life cycle, environmental threats, and other relevant topics of interest.

4.        4.  Experience OMSI by spending time learning about exhibits that interest you, observing a movie in the OMNIMAX theatre, and writing a 2 page summary describing the exhibits you enjoyed and learned the most from detailing their significance.

UNEXCUSED ABSENCES:  If you are unexcused on the day of a test or on a day an assignment is collected, you may not make up nor receive credit for either one.

TARDIES:.  Parents will be contacted via email or a phone call on the third tardy in a quarter. Further tardies will be dealt with according to school policy.

CHEATING:  Any student found to be cheating on an assignment or test will receive “zero” points for the work.  Copying another student’s work constitutes cheating. Parents will be notified.
