Description: This course is designed to be similar to a
freshmen college chemistry course. The
following topics are covered:
Formulas and Equations Thermodynamics
Stoichiometry Kinetics
Chemical Bonding Equilibrium
Systems
Quantum Mechanics Introductory
Organic Chem.
Gases Nuclear
Chemistry
Liquids and Solutions Descriptive
Chemistry
Text: Chemistry:
& Chemical Reactivity(4th ed.), Kotz & Treichel
READ YOUR BOOK several
times! Only reading the examples and
sample problems doesn’t constitute reading the book, and in most cases reading
it only once is not sufficient.
Review Text: Cracking the
AP Chemistry Exam by
Princeton Review (current edition)
Homework: A lot of this course deals with your ability
to work problems. You need to work
problems until you are proficient and understand them. At times you will find you need to rework
problems or work extra-unassigned problems.
Laboratory: We perform a number of labs during the
year. Read the labs before you come to
class because all of the lab time is usually needed to perform the lab.
Grading: Homework and lab work will make up 50% of
your grade, with the balance determined by your test performance.
89+
= A 79+ = B 69+ = C 59+ = D
AP Test: It is assumed that all in the class are
preparing to take the AP test in the spring.
Whether this is true or not, and out of fairness to all, everyone needs
to proceed with that intent. It would
be unfortunate to decide early on that you did not wish to take the test and
then realize too late that you need to take it. Keep your options open.
Prepare for the test.
End of Year Project: Students will decide what is
done this year for the final AP Chemistry project. Previous years AP classes have accomplished ambitious project
such as making biodiesel and running a 1982 Mercedes Benz on it. At the end of the project the car was
running so well we donated to an Americorp volunteer. Student s also have built solar powered cell phone chargers, water
powered generators and demonstrated the piezoelectric effect . With your help this year we hope to
accomplish something even better.
Help!! Almost everyone needs help in this course at
sometime. PLEASE don’t wait until
you’re hopelessly lost. Help each
other. See me. I am available everyday after school from
2:40 pm– ??? pm. or by appointment.
