Studying and Test Taking Strategies:

Preparing for tests starts on the first day of the chapter.  The student must take an active role from the start and maintain a consistent effort throughout the chapter.

Build confidence and competence with the material.

Listen to lectures, take notes, participate actively in class, do all homework assignments, and ASK QUESTIONS when you don't understand something.

On test day, BE POSITIVE.

Practice positive self talk.  Whether you've done the right things in preparing or not, be positive about the situation.  Negative thoughts will only hurt you further.

Use good test taking strategies.

Start by scanning the entire test.  Do the problems you are confident in first.  Save the problems you are unsure of until last.  You may find hints in other problems that will help.  Stay focused on the test and do your the best you can.  If you start to "freak out", take control of your thoughts and change them to something positive.

Although it is important to always do your best and earn good grades, no one math test controls your entire destiny.  Do your best to be relaxed.  If you are not prepared or do not do well, there will be other chances.  Just learn from what you've done wrong (or right) and do better next time.
