Graded assignments for the Jury:

1.Verdict essay  (due on the day that deliberations start)

 

Students will write a three-page minimum preliminary paper on the guilt or innocence of John Mundaden before deliberations begin.

bulletYou need to edit your paper for spelling and grammar. 

 

Content Requirements for the paper:

 

You need to write one paragraph for each bullet requirement:

 

bulletDescribe the law in question, and the burden of proof in this case.
bulletDescribe the important facts of the case by telling a chronological story of what you think happened from start to finish.  
bulletClearly and carefully describe the most convincing evidence in the case that created reasonable doubt or proved that a crime was committed beyond a reasonable doubt.  You must refer to details from at least THREE witness testimonies in order to defend your position.  
bulletProvide a verdict in this paper, and demonstrate how your verdict connects to the definition of the law.

2.  Apply Voir Dire to the jury deliberation process. -- the blue Applying Voir Dire sheet (due the class period after deliberations end)

 

a.  Based on your deliberation experience, identify whom you think the prosecution or defense would want to exclude from your jury.  Use specific examples from the deliberation process to support your statement in the sections labeled prosecution rationale and defense rationale.

3. Jury Deliberation Reflection Essay (due the class period after deliberations end)


Please provide a minimum two-page detailed reflection of the deliberation process.

You may refer to other jurors by name for the sake of explaining what occurred in the deliberation.  No juror’s grade will be penalized for being accused of others for wrongdoing.   In your essay, you need to provide descriptions of the following aspects of jury deliberation, and explain how well you think you did:

 

bulletWas the process influenced by bias?  
bulletHow well did you consider the law as it was explained to you?
bulletDid you keep in mind the burden of proof?
bulletDid you keep an open mind?
bulletDid jurors discuss the case with others or themselves outside of the deliberation room?
